Seed Quality Is Now a Climate Strategy — Why Uganda’s Agrodealers Must Lead the Shift
Uganda is currently experiencing inconsistent rainfall patterns — some zones are seeing above-normal rains, while others are receiving irregular intervals of dry breaks. In such a season, the very first “decision point” of the farmer matters more than ever.
That first decision is seed quality.
At Home Harvest Uganda, we believe that climate resilience starts at planting — not at harvest.
High-quality, tested hybrid seeds give farmers two critical advantages:
1️⃣ Strong germination even under stress
Good seed has the vigour to withstand saturation, cold soil, and uneven moisture.
2️⃣ Predictable crop performance
When the weather is uncertain, farmers must eliminate “input uncertainty”. Seed must NOT be part of the risk.
The first 10 days after planting determines most of the crop’s lifetime success — and this is where seed quality becomes the biggest factor.
This is why we continue strengthening our supply chain, building reliable resupply to agrodealers, and ensuring that farmers never have to guess whether a packet will perform.
Uganda’s food systems will not be strong because the rains behaved — but because the inputs in the ground were strong enough to respond.
Our message to agro-dealers this week:
- Guide farmers to always choose certified hybrid seed
- Reinforce the importance of field drainage in this rainy period
- Make seed quality part of the conversation — every single day
This is how we build climate-smart agriculture: starting at the seed bag.
