Empowering Northern Uganda’s Agriculture: Home Harvest’s Safe-Use Training & Farmer Engagement Campaign

Northern Uganda’s agricultural potential is unlocking rapidly. As smallholder farmers transition to commercial-scale farming in the Acholi and Lango subregions, access to high-yield crop seeds and inputs is only half the equation. The other, critical half is ensuring these products are used safely, responsibly, and efficiently. Improper guidance, chemical misuse, and poor application practices lead to health risks, environmental damage, and financial losses for farming households.

To address this gap, Home Harvest (U) Ltd, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), Makerere University, and the Lira Agro-input Dealers Association (LAIDA) – an affiliate of the Uganda National Agro-Input Dealers Association (UNADA) – conducted a rigorous 5-day training for agro-input shop attendants from June 29th to July 3rd, 2026. The training was hosted at the Margarita Palace Hotel in Lira City and was supported by the GIZ PRUDEV program.

From Shop Attendants to Certified Commercial Representatives

The ultimate goal of this training goes beyond safety basics. Home Harvest is building a robust commercial representation model. The trained shop attendants are now certified Home Harvest Commercial Representatives. Stationed directly within their respective farmer organizations, they act as the direct link between Home Harvest and local communities. They provide farmers with vital advisory support on crop management and ensure steady access to genuine, high-performing Home Harvest products like Magoba Maize and Supa Pesa Watermelon.

By empowering these attendants with advanced technical knowledge, Home Harvest is establishing a network of trusted advisors who combine product sales with expert safety recommendations.

Hands-On Training and Field Activities

The training covered safe chemical storage, precise mixing, dosage calculations, and personal protective equipment (PPE) use. It also addressed ecological concerns, warning against contamination of water sources and promoting the safe disposal of chemical containers. To bring these lessons to life, field activities were organized:

1. Teo Opkot Farmer Organization Field Day: A community gathering where local farmers witnessed practical demonstrations of Home Harvest crop varieties, especially our flagship Hybrid Maize Magoba, known for its outstanding drought tolerance, double-cobbing ability, and yield potential of up to 3.5 tons per acre.
2. Engagements with Prime Agro-Dealers: Strengthening relations with local distributors to ensure that when farmers demand Home Harvest seeds and inputs, they are readily available in local shops.
